Census: Shortest commutes in Grand Forks

November 2, 2009

Grand Forks, N.D. (AP) — A new U.S. Census Bureau report says Grand Forks-area drivers have the shortest commutes in the country.

The bureau's American Community Survey conducted from 2006-2008 looked at communities as small as 20,000 people. It lists the Grand Forks Metropolitan Statistical Area as the only metro area where the daily commute takes less than 15 minutes on average.

The Grand Forks MSA includes Grand Forks County and Minnesota's Polk County.

The New York City metro area has the longest commutes, at more than 34 minutes.

In North Dakota, average commute times in Minot were 15.4 minutes, in Fargo 16.2 minutes and in Bismarck 16.5 minutes.
